Males have a black throat and bib and are white on the undersides. Crown of the head is gray, the nape, back and wings are a rich Rufous color. Females are a pale gray-brown color, no real distinguishing markings.

Abundant and common in urban environments

A common backyard bird in commercial and suburban settings. Prefers areas that have a lot of non-native landscaping. Not nearly as common in developments where the native, natural habitat has been retained. A cavity nester, aggressive at taking over nesting locations from native species. A common species at backyard bird feeding stations where it prefers white-proso millet seed.
