Male and female plumage similar. A very plain, non-descript bird, uniformly gray. It's most distinguishing characteristic is the fact that it has a crest, which at times is laid back and not too noticeable.

Very chickadee-like in behavior. Usually seen either as a pair, or as part of a loose, mixed flock. Active foliage gleaner as it moves through the foliage looking for insects. Frequently vocalizes while it is foraging. Frequent visitor to backyard bird feeding stations, prefers small Black-oil sunflower seeds.
