Join Eric in the Santa Marta Highlands

August 13, 2026

Nine days in northern Colombia, to the world's highest coastal mountain range...

Event

Eric is leading a group to northern Colombia in January 2027, and there's room for anyone who wants to come along. It's a Holbrook Travel program, so lodging, local guides, and logistics are handled, you show up with binoculars and a field guide.

The trip starts at sea level and finishes high in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, the highest coastal mountain range in the world and home to more than a quarter of Colombia's endemic bird species. The opening days cover coastal wetlands, mangroves, and dry forest reserves. From there the group climbs into the Santa Marta Mountains, including El Dorado Natural Reserve and the San Lorenzo Ridge, with time in lowland foothills, coffee plantations, and high-elevation cloud forest.

What you'll be looking for

  • The 20-plus endemic species of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, including Santa Marta Parakeet, Santa Marta Woodstar, and White-tipped Quetzal.
  • American Flamingos and other shorebirds at Los Flamencos Sanctuary.
  • Mangrove specialists at KM 4 in Salamanca National Park - Russet-throated Puffbird, Stripe-backed Wren, Caribbean Hornero, and Turquoise-winged Parrotlet all possible.
  • A different bird community entirely on the sandy trails of the La Guajira Peninsula.

You'll also meet members of the region's Indigenous Wayúu community, and spend time with people working locally to make birding a sustainable development resource, a close look at how a trip like this supports the habitat it visits.

Who it's for

Anyone who wants to see neotropical birds with someone who knows how to find them. You don't need a Colombia list or a 500-species life list. If you've been on one of Eric's bird walks around Prescott, this is the same approach, just at nine days and 20 endemics.
